Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a system of manual (or hands-on) treatments of the musculoskeletal system.

Initially devised by A.T. Still, since the late 1800's it has grown and evolved to encompass a variety of modalities and treatment goals, and is utilized by osteopathic physicians across the world.

The goal of OMM, a.k.a. neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM), is to assess the body for areas of anatomical dysfunction and dysregulation, and utilize gentle direct and indirect manual manipulation to return function to normal and promote healing.  OMM is an empirically studied technique that has been shown to be effective for a variety of diseases including but not limited to:

While primarily acting as a hands on treatment directed towards the musculoskeletal system, osteopaths have long used OMM/NMM to treat the musculoskeletal components of other disease processes in order to bring relief to patients.  OMM avails the physician the opportunity to appreciate the complex and holistic dynamics of their patients each with their unique needs and concerns.  OMM allows the physician to communicate caring and healing touch while allowing the patient to address their own needs and actualize their role in the healing process.  In a patient and unhurried manner, OMM allows the physician to understand and affect how health and disease manifest individually to each patient.
